2 to 6 months between January and July
The number of Large Outdoor Fires is increasing, particularly forest fires. Many continents and countries (Europe, Australia, Russia, USA, Japan) are impacted by an increased fire risk involving built environments, industrial sites, tourist accommodations... Since 2018, the University laboratory has been developing a research theme focusing on fire risk reduction at forest/habitat interfaces, in collaboration with international academic players (USA, Europe), industrialists and regional players.
The aim of this internship is to develop mitigation methods to reduce the vulnerability of a structure's envelope (housing or other) to an external fire. We are looking at a number of possibilities, such as reducing fire intensity through appropriate arrangement of ornamental vegetation, active means of reducing fire power, and passive means of increasing the resistance of building materials and elements.
Finally, the student will provide recommendations for making buildings, and more generally any structure, more resistant to thermal attack from wildfire. The internship will include experimental work on the EXPLORII platform and in the laboratory, and/or numerical work to simulate fire behavior.
